Gerónimo Araquistain

Painting, object and plush as a language for popular icons, symbolic systems and consumer culture.

Gerónimo Araquistain is an artist from Buenos Aires whose practice develops between painting, object and sculpture. He uses plush as his main material, working through accumulation and repetition to build surfaces where images and signs from popular culture and systems of consumption are reorganized.

His work makes visible symbolic structures that often remain naturalized or unnoticed in their original contexts. Through icons, cards, crowns, objects and mass-cultural references, Araquistain transforms familiar images into materially unexpected works.

Practice

Araquistain’s practice is based on painting, object and sculpture, with plush as a central material. His work uses accumulation, repetition and synthetic images to explore the way popular culture, consumption and national customs produce symbolic forms.

His works often draw from tarot, the Spanish playing-card system, consumer imagery and familiar icons. By shifting these references into plush and object-based formats, he creates a tension between visual immediacy, material softness and the cultural charge of the image.

Why Icon Lab Gallery selected his work

Icon Lab Gallery selected Gerónimo Araquistain for a visual language built through strong icons, unexpected materiality and contemporary symbolic systems.

His work aligns with the gallery’s interest in images that are immediately legible while opening critical readings around culture, consumption and collective imagination.
